Healthy Treats for Your Dog

63505e4c19c26c87527536ab528d5335Because we love our dogs so much, we try to ensure they eat healthy food however, many people overlook this policy when choosing dog treats. Many pet owners would be surprised to learn that some of the Treats on the market are not only unhealthy, they can be dangerous over time. Some of the chemicals used in the manufacturing process or, added as a preservative are now known to be toxic. Amazingly, some of these dog food companies continue to use them in spite of the risk.

The good news is, there are plenty of Treats available that are nutritious and healthy for your dog. Obviously, the first thing we should do is, carefully inspect the ingredients of the Treats we buy. Look for the seals of approval from governing bodies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) or especially the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council). If a product claims to be beef or chicken flavored but, on the label of ingredients the beef or chicken is listed last after a long string of hard to pronounce chemical additives, you probably want to pass on it. You want a product where if it says, “chicken or beef” the meat tops the list of ingredients.

Just like Humans, dogs need vitamins and fiber found in fresh fruits and vegetables, many dog Treats offer this essential part of a dog’s diet. Just remember that grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs but, other than that, any fruit or vegetable is good for your dog. When it comes to chew treats and Jerky Treats, avoid the ones made from mostly corn, soy or wheat because these kinds of filler are very hard for a dog to digest. They can be responsible for upset stomach and gas. It takes very little effort to make sure our dog’s are rewarded with Treats that they love so much but, are healthy as well.
